Modern Pain Management Techniques

Pain is a massive problem in our society, in fact it is estimated that at any given time, around one third of the population are in pain. Pain of any type is the most frequent reason for physician consultation. It is a major symptom in many medical conditions, significantly interfering with quality of life and general functioning.

Pain management is therefore an extremely important part of health care because people forced to continue living with extreme pain often become depressed and have poor treatment outcomes.

Some types of pain are still not really understood with as many as a third of cases having unknown origins.

Here are some of the things we do know:

* Pain is constant for about 20% of people.

* Back pain is the most common pain.

* Most chronic pain sufferers have had pain for at least 3 years.

* As can be expected, the incidence of pain increases with advancing age.

* Women report pain more often than men.

* Only 70% of sufferers look for professional help.

Pain Management

Modern pain management programs should be multidisciplinary combining the input of Medical practitioners, Acupuncturists, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Clinical psychologists and Occupational therapists, amongst others.

1. Narcotics are often prescribed for severe pain, but narcotics carry with them a potential for side effects and addiction, so patients and caregivers must weigh the level of pain against these dangers in the pain management process.

2. Numerous studies have found that certain complementary therapies are effective in pain management.

3. Massage therapy can hasten pain relief, soothe stiff sore muscles, and reduce inflammation and swelling.

4. Psychological pain management teaches people skills to cope with pain. Research has shown that having realistic, helpful thoughts is an important part of pain management.

5. Natural pain relief is a sought after alternative to medication and drugs based on chemicals and other synthetic medication. Herbs have been used for centuries for pain relief, but many have not undergone extensive study. Some allergic reactions might occur with some patients using natural pain relief, but these can be easily controlled or prevented by doing a skin test before using the natural pain relief.

6. One of the pain management modalities are trigger point injections and nerve blocks utilizing long acting anesthetics and small doses of steroids.

7. NSAID pain relief medication will not only relieve pain, but also reduce fever and inflammation. However there are real disadvantages associated with the long term use of these drugs.

8. Aspirins, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen are other common remedies used for the relief of acute pain.

9. Morphine is the major active substance in opium and a very potent pain relief medication. Morphine will act directly on the central nervous system and is commonly used as a pain relief medication for acute and severe pain caused by surgery or major trauma. Morphine is also used as a pain relief medication for moderate and severe chronic pain, such as pain caused by cancer.

10. TENS machines give short term pain relief to many people. These machines are fairly cumbersome but at least they do not have side effects.

11. Finally there is a new modality which has just been released on to the market and that is the rather unique pain patch which combines nano technology with crystals activated by body heat to produce an energy wave. The waves are transmitted to the origin of the pain where they produce an acupuncture effect which relieves pain.

There are reports of pain of 40 year duration being relieved instantly.

Sharp Knee Pain Symptoms – a Low Profile Knee Support Can be the Answer

The knee joint can be one of the most troublesome joints in the human body. – Would you agree?

Regardless of your age, gender, or athletic fitness level, many people will have knee discomfort at some point in their lives. This is mostly a result of the knee joint taking on a lot of stress due to your daily activities.

Think about it—running, walking, climbing steps, bending, kneeling, dancing, jumping, and sometimes, even sitting in one position for too long—all can put a strain on the knee joint. It’s not a shock that so many people, at some point, suffer through sharp knee pain symptoms.

There are times when the knee discomfort has a momentary effect and it can leave as quickly as it came. Other times, the sharp knee pain symptoms have more staying power, and they worsen over time. These are the symptoms that may signify a real problem that can become debilitating if left unchecked.

Discomfort can range from occasional throbbing pain symptoms, to a never-ending sharp stabbing sensation. They can occur in any area of the knee joint, such as the outside (lateral) part of the knee, the front of the knee, the inside (medial) part of the knee, or the back (posterior aspect) of the knee. The location, intensity and duration of the sharp knee pain symptoms can give clues as to the cause of the pain.

There are many conditions that can cause sharp knee pain symptoms, such as arthritis, subluxation of the patella (kneecap), trauma to the ligaments and cartilage inside the knee, bursitis, and even infection.

It is important to have your symptoms evaluated by a qualified medical specialist in order to determine their cause. But, whatever the cause of your sharp knee pain symptoms, there’s no doubt that if you are in pain, your first priority is to get relief from the discomfort.

Aside from rest, ice packs, and over-the-counter pain relievers, there is an alternative available to you that may help ease your sharp knee pain symptoms: a knee brace. These supports should never be overlooked.

A knee brace, when used properly, helps support and stabilize the knee joint, helping to relieve the stress that often exacerbates sharp knee pain symptoms. Moreover, when in place, a knee brace can help keep the knee and kneecap (patella) properly aligned, helping to alleviate a common source of sharp knee pain symptoms.

Some individuals today think that a knee support needs to be custom fabricated, are hard to use, and cost too much money to be practical. The truth is, typically, an effective knee support does not need to be custom made to be useful; nor are they cumbersome and hard to use.

Just think about it. If a knee brace was so big and bulky, no body would use them and all the knee brace manufacturers would have been out of business a long time ago.

A knee support may be the solution that you have been searching for. Some people have referred to knee supports as a “pain pill” due to the pain reduction they can help provide!

Good Nutrition is the Secret for a Pain Free Life

Nutrition information and natural remedies are now being used by a large population in the United States and throughout the world.  People are looking for alternative ways to create health or recover from long standing illnesses.  Drugs have been applied for around a hundred years and we all know that they are good for emergencies and for short term use to get past health dangers.

By learning the nutritional basics or advanced principles, you can decide how to deal with an illness or disease you have or that your family has.  Most people that I have talked with have very little knowledge about nutrition and the amount that they do know was acquired from friends, parents or relatives.

Nutrition is actually a science, which can get quite complex in theory.  Nutrition information is concerned with the chemical make up of food, how this food is digested, how it is absorbed and used by your body.  It is all about how it is used to promote health, and how it is used to prevent and eliminated illness.

For the normal person, the nutrition they need to learn is the practical side of nutrition.  Learning some theory and mixing it with good practical nutritional habits is essential for maintaining your body free from illness.

Inflammation comes from excess acid in your body.  This acid is created from the foods you eat.  Eating certain foods leave an acid residue in your cells that then travels into the liquid surrounding your cells – lymph liquid. In the lymph liquid, this acid can damage the surrounding cells and tissue and in doing so starts the inflammation process.

Many scientists and medical researchers have uncovered the basic principles of the acid-alkaline body.  Maintaining an acid body, which many people have, is what creates and maintains various deadly diseases. Most pathogens like an acid body.  Cancer thrives in an acid body.

Nutrition is about how to maintain an alkaline body.  It points to the right foods to eat so that the correct minerals can become available to neutralize your acid body.  An acid body can be neutralized with minerals found in fruits and vegetables.

Nutrition says your body is bioelectrical.  Your body is run by electrical and chemical reactions.  You need to discover what foods support these electrical and chemical activities.  Without the right electrical activities in your body, your cells will not get the right nutrition, which is necessary for your survival.  Nutrition is also about discovering what food, nutrients and minerals your body needs and what illness you develop if you don’t get them.

To learn the correct practical, nutrition information is now possible on the internet.  In the past learning nutrition was only available in books, tapes, and seminars.  But now, you can get on the Internet and find excellent courses that will help you learn how you can be free of disease or acquire excellent health.  Start now to discover how you can become a semi-expert in nutrition for yourself and for you family.

Home Remedy Gout Can be Handy in Times of Sudden Pain

Gout is caused by the rise of uric acid in the blood. There are a few traditional home remedies for gout that people resort to when pain sets in. It has been used much before modern medicines had come in. Some of the remedies used by our grandparents are applying ice to the area of the pain. It is the first thing that you should do for at least 10-15 minutes on the swollen area. Joints usually get inflamed during gout and a cold pack on that area is a great home remedy for gout. Persist even if the cold becomes unbearable as the gout pain will subside after some time.

If you want to take a painkiller, you can go for ibuprofen. To ease up the pain, exercise the joints at least 2 times a day to relax the joint and the surrounding area. If your big toe is afflicted with gout pain, soak it in Epsom salt. You can get home remedy for gout right away if you allow your feet to soak in warm water filled with the salt. Keep your feet soaked till the water remains sufficiently warm. Magnesium in the Epsom salt gets your magnesium level to rise for better blood circulation in the heart resulting in lowering your BP. Unwanted materials like toxins and metals that can cause pain are washed off.

You can also use Epsom salt when you bathe. As your tub fills with water, pour two cups of the salt and take a leisurely bath. If you can’t do it on normal working days, try to do it on weekends. Exercising the area of the pain is possibly the best home remedy for gout. But you have to exercise regularly and never leave it for a day to prevent pain in the joints. Cartilage joints get nourished with regular exercise and also helps rid the body of waste products. Muscles around the joint get strengthened making them better positioned for joint support. You could also lessen the risk of injuries. Exercises also help stretch the muscles for better mobility and it is an ideal home remedy for gout.

For lingering joint pain while you are at home, you can keep the cotton wadded foot raised for some time and relax. The idea of home remedy gout is to bring down the blood pressure as quickly as possible to make you feel more comfortable. Gout is not a mysterious disease but very much common among many nowadays. It makes the need for home remedy gout so important for quick relief from pain.

Recovering From a Broken Heart: Expressing the Pain Through Writing

Recovering from a broken heart is not easy. If you have recently been through a hard breakup with someone you love, you are probably trying to find ways to ease the pain. You may have tried everything you can think of to get over the pain of heartache, including spending a lot of time alone, talking to friends, watching love story-themed movies, or reading books about the topic of heartache.

If it has been a while since the breakup and you feel like the pain you are feeling is not going away fast enough, here are some tips are some tips for getting over heartache.

An important first step for getting over a broken heart (or any unhappy occurrence in your life) is to simply face the pain directly. While avoiding the reality of what you are going through may seem like the easier path, in the long run you are only making it harder on yourself. So, face up to whatever painful situation you are going through – doing so is essential for your healing.

A great way to work through your pain is to write a poem or song about your heartache. Doing so can help you deal with your painful feelings when you have broken up with someone special.

You do not have to be a poet – or even a writer – to write a broken-heart love poem or song. Remember, nobody else has to read what you write. It is intended for you and you alone. Just write down your feelings and thoughts. Be as honest as possible with yourself about what you are really feeling. Just write in plain English: there is no need to try to emulate the great romantic poets of past centuries or otherwise sound impressive.

Hint: to really express yourself effectively, just write the way you talk. Let it flow out of you. You may be surprised at just how easy it can be. For example, start by writing one long paragraph filled with all your feelings and everything you want to express, just to get it out. You can always go back later and re-arrange your words into a poem or a song.

Once you have written your poem about having a broken heart, feel free to go even deeper into your feelings. Try writing another song or poem. The point is to express yourself as you really feel now. That is all that matters – not the quality of the words on the page.

If you do decide to share your poem or song with others as a means of recovering from a broken heart, by all means do not be shy. Or, if you want, you can even publish it online. There are sites made for just that type of thing. You could choose to post it anonymously, or you could choose to associate your name with it if that feels right.

Remember, getting over heartache is all about the process of moving through the pain. Expressing your feelings on paper can be a great release.

10 Tips to Reduce Muscle Pain Naturally – Without Side Effects

If you suffer from muscle or joint pain you know how much it can impact your life. From not being able to play active sports to missing out on family fun – the effects can be far-reaching and upsetting. So, its natural that we search for pain remedies.

Almost everyone is familiar with pain relief formulas. Over 30 billion over-the- counter tablets and 70 million prescriptions are sold annually just in the USA. Known as ‘Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs’ (NSAIDs), a few commonly known names include Aspirin, Ibuprofin, Advil, and Motrin as well as prescription products like Celebrex and Vioxx. What most people might not know is that over 16,000 Americans die from NSAIDs a year and approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for NSAID related gastrointestinal complications.(1)

There is an alternative. Natural pain relief therapies can decrease inflammation and help repair tissues. The following are some starting points for investigating natural solutions further:

1. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night: During the deeper stages of sleep the human body produces growth hormone, which results in tissue healing and repair. Inadequate amounts of sleep contribute to pain. Natural sleep remedies that can help you get a deep and restorative sleep are Melatonin, Hydroxy L- tryptophan (5-HTP), Calcium, Mangesium and colloidal gold. You can also listen to relaxing music – try searching on itunes for ocean sounds.

2.Take a green-lipped mussel oil supplement: If you suffer from pain, swelling or other symptoms commonly associated with arthritis, you may benefit from taking green-lipped mussel oil from New Zealand. In a clinical trial conducted at the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital in Glasgow, UK, preparations of green-lipped mussel extract were shown to benefit 76 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients and 70 percent of osteoarthritic patients (2) The omega-3s contained in green-lipped mussel oils (more potent than fish oils) cannot be manufactured by our body and decrease inflammation. The EPA and DHA essential fatty acids have been so effective that some people have been able to discontinue their use of other medications altogether.

3. Take MSM, or “organic sulphur”. It can lessen inflammation, pain, and stiffness due to arthritis, muscle, or back pain and helps to balance the blood chemistry in these conditions. MSM helps supply the sulfur amino acids needed for healing.

4. Massage a blend of essential oils of arnica, Calendula and St John’s work into the affected painful area. Applying essential oils directly on the area nourishes cells and enables the body to metabolize waste and heal injuries more quickly. Herb Pharm makes a a blend called “Trauma Oil” which is very effective. Essential oils can help relax tense muscles and improve circulation.

5. Eat a whole food, mineral rich diet with plenty of vegetables and whole grains. Vegetable juices and green chlorophyll-rich foods can help relieve muscle inflammations by promoting the elimination of toxins from the body. Cut back on the amount of meat containing large amounts of saturated fat, which impacts the effective functioning of the liver – possibly leading to inflammation and irritation. Animal fats also contain arachadonic acid which can stimulate inflammation.

6. Take Glucosamine sulfate: Glucosamine is a naturally occurring element in the body that plays a crucial role in the building and healing of cartilage. Glucosamine may be efficient in treating and even delaying the progression of osteoarthritis. Some studies have hinted that glucosamine may be as effective as NSAIDs in treating joint conditions, while having fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

7. Magnetic therapy: Magnetic therapy is a safe method of applying magnetic fields to the body for therapeutic purposes. It helps speed the healing process and improve quality of sleep without any adverse side effects. A study from the University of Virginia showed that that a magnetic field of moderate strength can result in significant reduction of swelling when applied immediately after an inflammatory injury. Dilation of blood vessels is a major cause of swelling, and it’s thought that the magnets worked by limiting blood flow to the affected area. Individuals wearing magnetic jewelry have reported diminished muscle soreness and lessening of cramps. Try sleeping on a magnet mattress pad to help ease the pain of muscle soreness or apply magnet straps to sore muscle or tendonitis areas.

8. Take Vitamin D: Researched conducted by the University of Minnesota found that 93% of all subjects with non-specific musculoskeletal pain were vitamin D deficient. Taking Vitamin D and CoQ10 can help alleviate muscle pain caused by cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. Vitamin D can also be synthesized naturally by the body upon exposure to sunlight.

9.Cayenne pepper:A teaspoon of cayenne shaken in 2 ounces of olive oil can be used as an ointment and rubbed directly into sore muscles. Cayenne contains capsaicin which eventually inhibits secretion of the neurotransmitter Substance P, that transmits pain to the brain, lessening muscle soreness, sprains and cramps.

10. Try an Epsom salt bath: The magnesium sulfate of Epsom Salt acts as a muscle relaxant, and by easing muscle pain it helps the body to eliminate harmful substances. Due to changes in agriculture in the past century, most Americans are deficient in Magnesium. Studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt! Magnesium and sulfate are both easily absorbed through the skin. Fill a bathtub with water as hot as you can stand. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts. The heat of the bath will increase circulation and reduce inflammation.

The Truth is Out: Magnet Therapy is Effective For Alternative Pain Management

As an alternative or supportive type of treatment, magnetic therapy is relatively old and well documented. In fact Queen Elizabeth the 1st, used magnetic therapy in the early 16th century. Others, such as the Austrians, the ancient Greeks and even early American researchers, physicians and scientists have all experimented with the healing powers and their effect on the body. Also known as magnotherapy, it is comprised of placing one or more small, strong and very thin magnets over different parts of the body to help in pain management and useful in aiding in body discomfort.

This therapy was adapted based on the theory that there is a magnetic field within the human body and in fact is present in each and every cell within the body. This alternative approach works to stabilize or support the cell walls and prevent leakage of fluids, resulting in less pain, inflammation and subsequent irritation and discomfort. At a cellular level the magnets work to block sodium and calcium movement through the cell membrane, which is the main culprit for triggering pain impulses. Basically they switch off the problem at the cellular level that is signaling that there is pain, preventing this information from getting to your brain.

It is not designed to specifically treat a medical condition; rather it is used to assist in the management of pain while other holistic, alternative or traditional types of medical treatments are completed. Since there are no drugs or changes to the body’s natural chemical composition, it is safe to use as an accompaniment with any type of drug. Since it does use magnets some individuals, especially those with pacemakers, neurostimulators, or other types of very sensitive electronic components, need to carefully check with their doctor before using this type of treatment. Pregnant women also need to check with their doctors before utilizing it’s healing powers.

Using magnets in treating different types of pain throughout the body is a real science and is not as simple as just sticking them on different body parts. Researchers have determined where they should be placed to provide the best possible reduction of different types of pain and discomfort. Just a few of the common pains treated with therapy include conditions such as tennis elbow, lower back, hip and leg pain, jaw pain, neck and shoulder pain and knee and foot pain. In addition, tenderness associated with menstrual cycles and migraines can often be very effectively managed, without the need for other prescription medications.

One of the amazing features is that it starts to work very shortly after they are placed in the correct location. Many people report that the soreness begins to noticeably decrease within literally two to three minutes of usage. While others may require slightly more time, perhaps up to ten to fifteen minutes, the full effect will be felt. Usually if the patient doesn’t feel any noticeable improvement it is because they are not correctly positioned. A bit of adjusting and testing is all that is needed to start seeing the benefits.

Those used in magnetic therapy are placed in a specific configuration to provide maximum gradient between the corresponding magnets. This gradient is what actually produces the benefit, so each one doesn’t have to work alone. Different patterns of placement work better for specific areas and types of pain. They attach to the skin with double sided tape that is easy to apply and remove. They are used as necessary with some individuals using them only for brief periods throughout the day when needed while others with more chronic types of pain may choose to wear them throughout the entire day or night. Whichever is your choice, you will soon start to feel better with this holistic and alternative approach to pain management.
